#1: Review Workshops on Community Action Plan |
|
In July and August 2004, an initial set of two-day Community Action Plan (CAP) Workshops took place in all the ten focal villages and the resultant CAPs were formulated and endorsed by each community. Since then, various physical and socio-economic activities have been implemented by the communities based on their own CAPs.
However, one year has passed since the initial CAPs were formulated and the need to review the CAPs was recognized by both the Project and the focal communities due to the rapid change in the situation, which is peculiar to the post-conflict areas, such as the progress of resettlement program in Manthai West AGA Division.
Taking the above situation into consideration, the CAP Review Workshops were conducted at all focal villages to review the needs of the communities and formulate the modified CAPs. The workshops included self-evaluation exercise of community members on the Project activities, identification of new needs and confirming commitment of both community members and the Project on their needs. In total, 325 villagers participated in the workshops.

#2: Rehabilitation of village internal road in Santhipuram |
|
People in Santhipuram requested the Project to support to rehabilitate an important part of village roads of about 1.6 km. The rehabilitation of the road is their aspiration of long standing since it went under the water every year in the rainy season. Following is the interview with Treasurer of Rural Development Society on how they rehabilitated 1.6 Km of road incorporating community participation.
“For the past 08 years we approached many Governmental and Non-governmental Organizations seeking support for the renovation of village road because road is impassable during rainy days. School children go to school walking in the water. But no one was prepared to fund for the renovation.
Since we gained confidence after implementing construction of Pre school building via Community Managed Rehabilitation (CMR) under MANRECAP, we thought we can do it by ourselves if part of the fund is provided.
So, we approached MANRECAP and they agreed to provide funds amounting to Rs. 997,000.00 to purchase required quantity of Gravel and Community agreed to provide the balance funds amounting to Rs.1,110,000.00 for other activities via savings from purchase of Gravel and the balance via Community participation. Community also agreed to contribute to activities.
Now the work is nearing completion. During these three months, community people have been working very hard to rehabilitate their own road. I’m proud of our people.” |
