Article #3: Sewa Village

3.1: Poultry farming

Based on the result of the diet survey and discussions with Farmers’ Organizations (FO), it was identified that the need of improving the present diet of people in the area was high and consequently, the poultry farming was prioritized as the first step in livestock husbandry in each village. Firstly, 10 chicks have been provided to each of 19 families in Sewa Village, where the living condition is severer than any other focal villages.

It is important to note that local breeds were distributed as they are suitable for the environment in the focal villages and easy to be reared and to reproduce. With the introduction of this program it is expected that the people could improve the present poor diet, especially the nutritional condition of children, by the consumption of eggs. Additionally, selling surplus eggs could supplement their income, especially for women headed families.

3.2: Community Water Supply System

5.2: Manufacturing of concrete products

Cement block making has already been commenced by Women’s Rural Development Society and community groups mainly consisting of youths in Pali Aru since the 1st year, utilizing cement block making machines lent by the Project and skills obtained through Community Managed Rehabilitation. Building materials produced by these groups have been sold to people outside as well as to villagers as low cost building materials.

With such initiatives taken by WRDS and community members with the support of the Project, WRDS had steadily gained from the activity up to April 2006. The activity, however, became sluggish after the transport of cement to the uncleared area was banned in May 2006 and all of reconstruction and housing projects in that area, which were possible buyers of those cement blocks, have been suspended since then.
